Swap Free Forex Account Explained

Quick answer: A swap free forex account is a trading account that does not charge or pay overnight interest, called the swap or rollover, on positions you keep open past the daily cutoff. You still pay normal trading costs such as the spread. What disappears is the nightly fee for holding a trade. At Roventar Trade, all three live accounts (Flexi, Platinum and ECN) are swap free.

I am writing this in October 2026, one month after the US Federal Reserve raised interest rates for the first time since 2023. That single decision quietly made holding many trades overnight more expensive. When traders ask me why their balance slipped even though price barely moved, the answer is very often the swap. So in this guide I will show you what swaps are, what they really cost with numbers I worked out myself, and how to judge any swap free forex account before you open one.

What is a swap in forex?

A swap is the interest you pay or earn for holding a leveraged position overnight. It comes from the gap between the interest rates of the two currencies in a pair, plus a small fee added by the broker.

Here is the simple version. When you buy EURUSD, you are in effect borrowing dollars to hold euros. If the dollar rate is higher than the euro rate, you pay the difference every night. If you hold the opposite side, you may earn it.

Three things every trader should know:

• When it is charged: at the daily rollover, usually 5pm New York time. Close before that and no swap applies.

• Triple swap Wednesday: most brokers charge three nights of swap on Wednesday to cover the weekend, because spot forex settles two days later.

• It can be positive or negative: on a standard account you either pay or receive, depending on the rate gap and your direction.

Why swaps matter more in 2026?

Swaps follow central bank rates, and 2026 has been a year of rate rises. That makes the overnight cost of a trade bigger than it was a year ago.

Look at where the big three central banks stand right now:

• United States: the Federal Reserve raised its target range to 3.75% to 4% on 16 September 2026, its first hike since 2023.

• Eurozone: the European Central Bank lifted its deposit rate to 2.50%, effective the same day.

• Japan: the Bank of Japan moved its policy rate to 1.0% in June, the highest level since 1995.

That leaves a gap of about 1.5 points between the dollar and the euro, and about 3 points between the dollar and the yen. The wider the gap, the larger the nightly swap. And this is a huge market: the Bank for International Settlements found that global forex trading reached $9.6 trillion a day in its latest survey, up 28% from 2022.

How much does a swap really cost? Three worked examples

The formula is simple:

Position value × yearly financing rate ÷ 365 × number of nights

I used an illustrative financing rate for each example below. Real swap rates change daily and differ by broker, instrument and direction, so treat these as a way to see the scale, not as a quote.

Example 1: Gold held for two weeks

• Position: 0.1 lot of gold, which is 10 ounces

• Gold price: about $4,150 an ounce in late September 2026, according to RoboForex market analysis

• Position value: $41,500

• Illustrative financing rate: 6% a year

• Cost per night: $41,500 × 6% ÷ 365 = $6.82

• Cost for 14 nights: about $95

Gold pays no interest, so holding a long gold position is financed at dollar rates. When the Fed raises rates, holding gold overnight usually gets more expensive.

Example 2: EURUSD held for one month on a small account

• Position: 0.1 lot, which is 10,000 euros, worth about $11,814 at 1.1814

• Illustrative financing rate: 2.25% a year (the 1.5 point rate gap plus a broker fee)

• Cost per night: $0.73

• Cost for 30 nights: about $21.85

That looks small. But on a $500 account, it is about 4.4% of your balance gone in a month, just for holding the trade, before price has moved at all.

Example 3: A swing trader's full year

• Average position: 0.2 lot of gold (20 ounces, about $83,000)

• Nights held across the year: 120

• Illustrative financing rate: 6% a year

• Cost per night: $13.64

• Yearly swap bill: about $1,637

This is the number most swing traders never add up. On a swap free forex account, that line on the statement is zero.

What does swap free mean?

Swap free means the broker removes the overnight interest from your account. You do not pay it and you do not receive it, no matter how long you hold the trade. Your other costs, mainly the spread, stay in place.

Is a swap free account the same as an Islamic forex account?

They started as the same thing, but today they are not always the same. Islamic accounts were built for traders whose faith does not allow paying or earning interest. Swap free is the wider term, and many brokers now offer it to any trader.

Demand on the faith side keeps growing. The AlHuda Centre of Islamic Banking and Economics estimates that global Islamic finance assets reached $5.2 trillion in 2025, up 14.9% in a year. Its chief executive, Zubair Mughal, put it simply: Islamic finance is "moving from regional concentration to global relevance." Estimates do differ by method; the IFSB puts the figure lower, at about $4.4 trillion.

If religious compliance is your reason for choosing a swap free forex account, read the broker's full terms and check them with a scholar you trust. Removing swaps is one part of the picture, not all of it.

The fine print: what to check before you choose

Not all swap free accounts work the same way. Many brokers offer it only on request, only to certain countries, or only for a few days before an admin fee starts. Others quietly widen the spread to make up for the lost swap income.

The industry is moving in the traders' direction. In March 2026, Finance Magnates reported that brokers are now competing on cost, with more firms opening swap free trading to all clients. One broker executive described the goal as "making costs more transparent and predictable."

Before you open any swap free forex account, ask these six questions:

1. Is it available on every account, or only on request?

2. Is there an admin or holding fee after a certain number of days?

3. Are spreads or commissions higher than on the standard account?

4. Which instruments are covered: forex only, or also gold, indices and crypto CFDs?

5. Is there a time limit on swap free status?

6. Can the broker remove the status, and under what conditions?

If a broker cannot answer all six clearly in writing, that tells you something.

Swap free myths vs facts

Myth: Swap free means trading is free.

Fact: You still pay the spread, and on some accounts a commission. Only the overnight interest is gone.

Myth: Swap free is only for Muslim traders.

Fact: Many brokers, including Roventar Trade, offer it to every client.

Myth: Swap free is always the better deal.

Fact: You also give up positive swap. For example, on a standard account a long USDJPY position can earn interest because dollar rates sit well above yen rates. On a swap free account you do not receive it.

Myth: No swaps means less risk.

Fact: Your market risk and leverage risk are exactly the same. Swap free changes your costs, not your exposure.

Who benefits most from swap free trading?

Swap free trading helps most when you hold positions overnight often. It helps least when you open and close within the same day.

It suits you well if you are:

• A swing trader holding trades for several days or weeks

• A position trader in gold or indices, where financing costs build up fast

• Someone who often holds through the weekend and pays triple swap on Wednesday

• A trader who wants costs you can predict before you enter

• A trader who avoids interest for faith reasons

It matters little if you are a scalper or day trader who is always flat before 5pm New York time.

How swap free trading works at Roventar Trade?

At Roventar Trade, swap free is not an add on you have to request. Every live account is swap free, with a $100 minimum withdrawal and access to 900+ instruments across forex, indices, commodities and crypto CFDs.

• Flexi account: from $100, leverage up to 1:200, swap free

• Platinum account: from $500, leverage up to 1:300, swap free

• ECN account: from $10,000, leverage up to 1:100, raw spreads, swap free

Higher leverage lets you open larger positions with less margin, but it also magnifies losses just as fast as gains. Pick the level you can manage, not the highest one on offer.

You can compare all three Roventar Trade accounts here, or try a free demo first to see how your strategy behaves with zero overnight swaps.

My take: before you choose any account, open last month's statement and add up every swap line. If that number surprises you, a swap free forex account is worth a serious look. If it is close to zero, focus on spreads and execution instead.

Frequently asked questions

Who can open a swap free forex account?

At many brokers it depends on your country or a special request. At Roventar Trade, every live account (Flexi, Platinum and ECN) is swap free by default, subject to the normal account opening and verification checks.

Do swap free accounts have hidden fees?

Some brokers add admin fees after a set number of days or widen spreads instead. Always ask the six questions in this guide and read the full terms before you fund any account.

Is swap free trading halal?

Removing overnight interest addresses the main concern many Muslim traders have. Whether a specific account meets your standards is a question for a qualified scholar, so share the broker's terms with them.

What is triple swap Wednesday?

Most brokers charge three nights of swap on Wednesday to cover the weekend. On a swap free account, Wednesday costs you the same as any other day.

Does swap free apply to gold and crypto CFDs?

It depends on the broker. Some limit swap free status to major currency pairs. Check the instrument list before you trade metals, indices or crypto CFDs.

Is a swap free account better for scalping?

Not really. Scalpers usually close trades before the daily rollover, so they rarely pay swaps anyway. For scalping, spreads and execution speed matter far more.

Risk disclaimer: CFDs and forex are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money quickly because of leverage. Losses can exceed the capital you put in.
